Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter Talked at Met Gala 2022

Met Gala 2022’s red-carpet debuts and jaw-dropping moments made it one for the books! But there was one moment between singers Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter that flew under the radar—until now. The two stars were photographed talking to each other at this year’s Met Gala, and we should all take this as a sign: The world is healing.

In a new photo posted by Twitter account @viralmaterials and reposted by @PopCrave, Rodrigo and Carpenter are seen talking with each other and one other person inside the Met on fashion’s biggest night. We can see Rodrigo leaning forward to talk to Carpenter, who is seen from behind. This was Carpenter’s first time attending the Met Gala.

In case you don’t understand the sheer significance of this shot, let us fill you in: Nearly a year and half ago, in January 2021, Olivia Rodrigo released her debut smash hit “Drivers License.” The heartbreak anthem was the subject of months of fan speculation and theories, with many believing Rodrigo’s lyrics alluded to her split from her High School Musical: The Musical: The Series costar Joshua Bassett, though neither star ever confirmed their relationship.

There was one set of lyrics that stood out to fans as the biggest tell: “And you’re probably with that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me / She’s everything I’m insecure about.” Fans began to speculate that the 19-year-old singer’s references to an “older blonde girl” matched the description of Sabrina Carpenter, who turns 23 in 2022 and, at the time, was rumored to be in a romantic relationship with Bassett.

The rumors around the potential love triangle were only fueled by the release of Carpenter’s single “Skin,” which was released exactly two weeks after “Drivers Licence.” Many pointed out that certain lyrics in the song seemed to directly reference Rodrigo’s lyrics: “Maybe you didn’t mean it, maybe blonde was the only rhyme” and “Don’t drive yourself insane.”

As a result of the love triangle narrative that had been spun, Bassett and Carpenter faced fierce scrutiny all throughout January 2021, and even beyond. Around the same time of the songs’ releases, he experienced intense public hate and was hospitalized for heart failure, which his doctors believe could have been provoked by stress.

Both women have separately addressed their rumored rivalry. Carpenter released a statement on Instagram following the release of “Skin” that affirms she “wasn’t bothered by a few lines in a (magnificent) song and wrote a diss track about it.”

Rodrigo has publicly spoken about the drama multiple times, claiming that the song’s specific subject matter is the “least important part” of the record, and directly addressing the “feud” between the two young women in August 2021. “I don’t really subscribe to hating other women because of boys,” Rodrigo said in an interview. “I think that’s so stupid, and I really resent that narrative that was being tossed around.”

Within the past year and a half, all three stars have released new music, started new projects, and seemingly moved past the incident. This photographed convo from the 2022 Met Gala marks the first time the two have been seen interacting publicly since the infamous love triangle rumors began.

It’s important to note that Carpenter totally manifested this. “I just hope that one day / We both can laugh about it / When it’s not in our face / Won’t have to dance around it,” she sings in “Skin.”

While we may never know what the two stars talked about at the gala, it seems like it all might be water under the bridge.
