In a recent episode of her podcast Tell Me with Ellen Pompeo, the Grey’s Anatomy star expressed that she would love it if the medical drama would continue to focus on social justice throughout the series, as opposed to covering important topics with individual Very Special Episodes.
“I think if I had any desire, honestly, it would be to be less sort of preachy in one episode about certain things,” Pompeo said, per People. “It’s like, we do one episode about, let’s see … Asian hate crimes is one that we did this past season that was really moving. I think I’d like to see things happen a little more subtly and over time.”
Ultimately, the actor believes Grey’s Anatomy writers should “thread” these topics throughout the season instead of “consistently [hitting] you over the head for just one hour.”

On August 3, Variety reported that Pompeo is taking a slight step back from Grey’s Anatomy, which means less screen time for Dr. Meredith Grey. According to the publication, Pompeo will appear in just eight episodes in season 19, though she will still act as executive producer of the series and its weekly narrator.
This extra time off will allow Pompeo to focus on a new, untitled project for Hulu. Here is the description of the eight-episode limited series: “a Midwestern couple adopts what they believe is an 8-year-old girl with a rare form of dwarfism. But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, they slowly start to believe she may not be who she says she is. As they question her story, they’re confronted with hard questions of their own about the lengths they’re willing to go to defend themselves, falling into a battle that’s fought in the tabloids, the courtroom, and ultimately their marriage.”
