Rich Strike might not be done after a shocking win at the Kentucky Derby. The horse is potentially headed to the 2022 Preakness Stakes in the hopes of becoming the most unlikely Triple Crown winner of all time.
The 2022 Preakness Stakes is scheduled for Saturday, May 21, at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. It’s not confirmed, but it appears likely that Rich Strike will be in the race two weeks after finishing in first place at Churchill Downs.
“As long as he’s OK and after a week I know that it’s the right thing to do, we’ll do it,” Rich Strike trainer Eric Reed said Sunday morning, via The New York Post. “I have to do what I’ve done from day one with this horse, and that’s manage him and take care of him.”
The field for this year’s Preakness Stakes is still undetermined. The complete Kentucky Derby field wasn’t even finalized one day before the race. Rich Strike didn’t officially enter the 148th Run for the Roses until Friday because Ethereal Road was scratched from the 20-horse field.
A late entry into the Kentucky Derby, Rich Strike had 80-1 odds to win the first leg of the Triple Crown. Only Donerail in 1913 was a bigger longshot to win the Derby, doing so with 91-1 odds.
It’s been four years since the Kentucky Derby winner also won the Preakness Stakes. Justify won both races on the way to completing the Triple Crown in 2018.
There have been 13 Triple Crown winners in horse racing history.
Simplification is expected to run at Pimlico after finishing fourth place at the Kentucky Derby. Epicenter and Zandon, which came in second and third place at Churchill Downs, are the early Preakness favorites.
